In November, 2003, 15 Guiders and 20 of their children attended Family Stage 2 - Taking Root, a residential training event in Monashee Area.
The training sessions were enhanced by presentations by the children during breaks. Their creative demonstration of rock climbing expeditions, canoe trips and camping events complemented sessions about Risk Management and the use of the Safe Guide
The dress up box and play-acting were a huge success in the children’s program. During one break the children presented their version of how Lord Baden Powell acquired a 1000 bead necklace.
Rocks painted with their vision of peace were shared during a special flag ceremony. When the folded world flag was raised to the top of the pole and “broken,” Girl Guide rose petals drifted to the ground. The children delighted in collecting these as part of their special family training memories.
The assistance of Senior Branches girls was invaluable in both the kitchen and the children’s room. Their youthful imagination and never ending patience delighted the children and the Trainers.
Guiders were introduced to available resources including Science in a Box and Arts To Go developed by the BC Program and Training Committees.
The closing ceremony for this weekend training was a presentation on the overhead projector with the children’s special memories drawn on transparencies accompanied by a song written by three of the young children and one Trainer. The transparencies were copied and made into a booklet that was sent to all participants.
