BC Celebrates!

BC GIRL GUIDES CELEBRATED THE 95th BIRTHDAY

2005 marked the 95th year of Guiding in Canada. Here in BC, rather than pick one day or one event to celebrate, we created the theme "Birthday On Parade", a year-long celebration. Scroll down the page to see how we celebrated!

Resources for Guiders

A copy of the 95th Birthday Booklet (pdf) was delivered to all Contact Unit Guiders listed in IMIS. Check it out! It has many great ideas on how to celebrate Guiding: not just at the 95th birthday, but any time! It also has many service project ideas, instructions on how to build a parade float, history of Guiding in BC, a Trefoil pattern and much more. Also, it has the 95th Birthday Challenge, which runs until September 30, 2006 - and earns a cool crest (see image top right).

Check out the Birthday theme Campfire and the song honouring the 95th Birthday, "Guiding's Alive!"

Vancouver Area Girl Guides had a great reason to celebrate! Their "95th Birthday on Parade" Cake was a big hit at 'Collingwood Days' on May 14th. What a terrific parade float! Pictured below on the left is the float's builder, Tanya Virani. Way to go, Tanya!

Pitt Meadows District Girl Guides (Lougheed Area) celebrated Guiding's 95th birthday with this birthday themed parade float. Hearty congratulations are in order, as their float and community spirit won first place in the Annual Pitt Meadows Day Parade on June 4th. Pictured below, top and bottom left, are the float-builders, Rosie Dhami and Chantal Carmichael. Congratulations, Rosie, Chantal, Guiders and girls!

Thompson Nicola Area Girl Guides (pictured below) celebrated the 95th Birthday with a party June 5th in Kmloops. About 100 people attended for a day of fun and ice-cream. The Area's Trefoil Guild joined the fun by helping girls make a chain of the WAGGGS countries. Pictures submitted by Brenda Nordin.

It was a sunny Okanagan Saturday May morning when several Central Okanagan Division Girl Guides Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Guiders (pictured below) participated in the Kelowna Centennial Parade. The 45’ float was decorated with a 35’ long 95th Birthday cake, large presents, balloons, a tent and carried girls from all branches, several wearing heritage Guiding uniforms, some uniforms dating back to 1910. It was a great time and the float was definitely the largest and most colourful in the parade! Pictures submitted by Deb Deorksen. Happy 95th, Guiding!

Sparks, Brownies and Guides from Plateau District in Courtenay (pictured below) had a great time celebrating 95 years of Guiding in BC on July 1st at Courtenay's Canada Day Parade. They received Honourable Mention and Best Theme Float awards, which was a wonderful surprise on such a fun-filled day! A huge thank you to their sponsors. Pictures submitted by Jane Vadheim. Congratulations, Plateau District and Happy Birthday, Guiding!

It was a sunny Victoria day on Saturday, July 9th, when Juan de Fuca Division Sparks, Brownies, Guides, Pathfinders and Guiders (pictured below) participated in the Langford Lavender Annual Parade. The van (donated by Ann Friesen and her husband Tony) was decorated as a 95th Birthday cake, with candles, flowers and a Trefoil. In addition, girls decorated wagons from all branches, Pathfinders carried backpacks to represent Mosiac 2006, and all were in proper uniform. It was a great time, the van was definitely a hit and the most colourful in the parade! Also, everyone did their share of Public Relations by handing out bookmarks and pamphlets for all branches. Juan de Fuca Division Girl Guides won First Prize for Band/Walking Group. Mrs Margaret Jones (Trefoil Guild Member) rode in the van and Scouter Tony Friesen drove the van. Pictures submitted by Ann Friesen, Juan de Fuca PR. Congratulations to all girls and Guiders, and Happy Birthday, Guiding!
