Drama for Guides, Pathfinders & Senior Branches

Drama promotes team-work, communication and presentation skills, self-expression, understanding of others and self-confidence.

GUIDES:
Enjoy warm-ups, mixers, yells, concentration exercises, mime, making masks, action songs that tell a story, theatre sports (drama games) and skits. Here are a few activities similar to those in the Guiding drama books.

Warm-ups
Greetings: Walk around the room, begin with just a nod to acknowledge each other, at a signal, change to a bow, then a hand-shake, clap on the back, quick hug, finally, a noisy greeting with a pretend kiss on each cheek. Discuss how each felt, what was most comfortable for participants, what types of personalities/cultures would use each of the greetings.

Skit Ideas
Paper bag skits: place several items in a paper bag and have a patrol build a skit around it. An easy version would be related such as kitchen or camping supplies, to make it more challenging use a jumble of unrelated items.

Concentration
Lay in a circle facing into the middle, look at the person directly across from you for as long as you can without laughing, talking or showing any expression. See who can last the longest!

Drama Activities
Try "Three Pirates" from Jubilee song book, it tells an entire story that can be dramatized."My Aunt Came Back" From Songs to Sing and Sing Again is a fun song with lots of body movement."My Mother Gave Me" from Jubilee and "Swimming Hole" from Campfire Activities both involve using mime for actions.

Theatre Sports Drama "Telephone"
Have four people leave the room. The rest of the group chooses several activities for her to mime.Girl #1 practices once, the girl #2 is called in and watches girl #1.Girl #2 performs the mime when girl #3 is called in.Girl #3 performs when girl #4 is called in.Girl #4 performs, then #1 to show how much has changed from the original version.Great for showing the importance of observation and communicating clearly.

PATHFINDERS AND SENIOR BRANCHES
Enjoy most mixers, warm-ups and concentration exercises as long as they are not too young for them. They are more skilled at role playing, creating one-act plays, and particularly enjoy theatre sports. The girls can be a great resource for theatre sports as they are often used in drama programs in high schools. Sketch/theatre sport programs on television can offer ideas as well as the guiding drama books and those available from your local library. There are many opportunities to use drama throughout both the Pathfinder and Senior Branch programs.
