DISCUSSION TOPIC - BULLYING AWARENESS

Purpose: to increase a girl's awareness of abusive or bullying behavior.

1. What does bullying mean?

2. Discuss the difference between assertiveness and aggression. (You could look up the words in the dictionary so you understand the meanings.)

3. Name two types of aggression.

4. What should you do if you know someone is being bullied? (Discuss this in a group with your Guider. You could role-play a situation.)

5. What video games do you play? Are the characters aggressive or assertive?

6. Discuss all the ways “No means No!”

7. Name five characteristics that make people diverse.

8. What does ‘stereotype’ mean?

9. What TV shows do you watch? Do TV shows reinforce stereotypes? If so – how?

10. Do you think people who are disabled are treated differently than other people? How so? If so, does this help or hinder them?

Are there ways that people can handle their anger without being aggressive? What do you do when you get angry? What about going outside and having a group scream?

GUIDE BADGES - CHILD CARE

Purpose: to help a Guide learn skills in responsible childcare.

1. With an adult present, care for a baby or toddler for half a day, including at least one meal or feeding.

2. Show three ways of entertaining a baby or toddler.

3. Know how to get help in your community in case of an emergency (such as fire, accident or poisoning) and what to do until help arrives.

4. Tell ways to make a home safe for small children.

5. When you are old enough to baby-sit, what responsibilities would you have regarding visitors, phone calls, sleeping and eating? What else should you find out from the parents before they leave?

GUIDE BADGES - HIKER

Purpose: to teach a Guide the skills required to organize safe, enjoyable and comfortable hikes.

1. Show that you are familiar with the hiking rules of the Girl Guides of Canada-Guides du Canada.

2. Keep a record of at least three different types of hikes in which you have taken part. The record should tell:
- season of the year.
- place and method of travel, for example, snowshoeing, skiing, hiking, etc.
- purpose of the hike, such as exploring the outdoors, visiting places of interest, experimenting with different types of cooking, or just for fun.

3. Carry a backpack, suitably packed, and explain why you chose each of the items.

4. Describe two hike menus that you have used. Give recipes, quantities used, and number of persons served.

5. Practise “Minimum Impact” hiking with regard to building fires, garbage, latrines, etc.

6. Show ways your compass can be useful on hikes.

7. Show that you know the proper and courteous way to behave when using private and public property.

GUIDE BADGES - POWER SMART CHALLENGES

There is a book to go along with these challenges. Contact your Area Program Adviser or write to Province for a copy, or any questions you might have. There is no cost to these badges. These challenges are under revision. Please feel free to print this page out.

1. Learn to read your electric meter and compare the readings for two days, one weekday and one weekend day. Why is there a difference?

2. List five ways you could reduce the amount of electricity you use in your home. Share your suggestions with your unit and your family.

3. Do a poster or collage showing some of the sources of power.

4. Why must you play it safe around electricity? Demonstrate by an action story or skit, 5 things you must never do in and around your home when it comes to electricity safety.

5. Know where the circuit breaker in your home is. Is it labeled correctly?

6. Compare how a household chore was done before electricity and how it is done today. What effect has electricity had on our daily lives?
