Drama for all age groups provides opportunities to express yourself, improve listening skills, understand others, concentrate and most of all, gain self-confidence. Start with drama activities that girls find easy to manage, they will then feel more confident to take risks when challenged with new activities.
The activities listed below can work for both Sparks and Brownies depending on their developmental levels, which can vary greatly in children in this age group.
Sparks enjoy listening to stories, putting on puppet shows and simple drama activities.
Story-books that have repetitive language and large pictures work well. Librarians and Teachers can recommend books. Some stories work well on a felt board. Cut characters/shapes out of felt material then place them as the story progresses onto a felt board, (attach large pieces of felt to a solid backing of cardboard or plastic to make a felt board).
Story-telling tips use your voice dramatically, speak softly or loudly for emphasis, increase speed at the exciting moments and slow down as the story comes to an end.
Puppets offer opportunities for girls to express themselves and take on a role without feeling that they themselves are performing. Simple puppets can be made from small paper plates on a popsicle stick, plastic spoons or socks. Making masks out of paper plates or fun-foam is another way for girls to pretend to be someone else. Face-painting could be a bridging activity with older girls allowing Sparks and Brownies to become a character or animal.
Drama activities for Sparks include mixers and warm-ups such as: moving as different types of animals to music, imagining you are moving through the forest or jungle encountering hot sand, long grass etc., making sounds of vehicles, animals, etc.
Songs with actions/drama are fun for this age groups such as: Thorn Rosa from Sing a Song with Sparks and Brownies, Sandy Girl from Sing a Song, Dance with Me, and My Aunt Came Back from Songs to Sing and Sing Again.
