International Skipping Rhymes

Here are rhymes from around the world to be chanted while skipping rope.

The rope is turned very fast as soon as the word vinegar is said, in this rhyme found in France, Vietnam and Canada:

O! The lettuce!
When it grows up,
We will eat it
With oil and vinegar

From Australia comes this humorous rhyme:

A rabbit has a shiny nose
I'll tell you why my friend:
Because her little powder puff
Is on the other end.

This rhyme of outdoor celebration comes from Greece:

Skipping fun
Everywhere
But skipping rope is double fun
In the open air

In this rhyme from Kenya, the jumper pretends to be jelly and then sausage by wiggling and then turning around while jumping:

Jelly on the plate, jelly on the plate
Wiggle woggle, wiggle woggle
Jelly on the plate.
Sausage in the pan, sausage in the pan
Turn it around, turn it around
Sausage in the pan

This rhyme is chanted in many
English speaking countries:

I saw Esau
Sitting on a seesaw
And Esau saw I saw him
Though Esau saw I saw him saw
Esau went on sawing
How many Esaus in that?
(the answer is none)

This nursery rhyme is chanted in
England and the United States:

Intry, mintry, cutry corn
Appleseed and apple thorn,
Wire, brier, limber. Lock,
Twelve geese in a flock.
One flew east, one flew west,
One flew over the cuckoo's nest
