Welcome to the World Restaurant

INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRY:
Creamy clam chowder
Fresh garden salad
Roast Beef
Yorkshire pudding
Broccoli, Carrots, Peas
Rolls and butter
Fruit plate
Chocolate Pie or cake
Tea, Coffee, Pop

DEVELOPING COUNTRY:
Boiled rice
Boiled vegetable
Chapatis
Water

Use pictures of each food if you can. It will help the girls see the difference in the quantity, quality, and variety of food.

Variation One:
Divide into groups using the following percentages:
60% Asia and Pacific
15% Europe and Russia
10% Africa
10% South America
5 % North America

Label five tables with the above names. Decorate the tables of Europe and North America with china, silverware, fresh flowers, and napkins. Serve the guests a three-course meal of their choice from the menu above (you could use pictures of the food).

At the other continents people sit on stools or even the floor. They only have a cup, a spoon and a bowl. Make sure you serve food in restricted quantities. Give one continent chopsticks (but not enough for all). Invite your guests to sit down and enjoy their meal.

Wait for their reaction. You can ask the following questions when the girls start looking at what the others have. What's wrong with the meal? Why aren't you eating? Is this fair? Who decided where you would eat? Can you suggest a solution to this problem?

Variation Two:
Snack Time
Prepare 6 tables:
- two are from industrialized nations
- four are from developing nations.
Country #1 is rich, it has cake, cookies, juice, pop, cups, but no knife to cut the cake.
Country # 2 has the same food but no knife, juice or pop.

Each developing country has only one or two products.
As girls enter give them a ticket with a number on it. They are to sit at the same number table. Step back and watch. Lead the discussion using the questions from Variation One.

If you do this game with younger children, make sure you have enough treats to equally share with all.

Questions to ask your girls: How did it feel to be a member of a poor country? A rich country? What should we do? What can you do as a Member of Girl Guides?
