Camping

“I’ve been in Guiding since I was 5 and I’ve experienced lots over the years. I’ve had many good times and lots of memories including Mt. Washington, SOAR and camping. I’ve learned lots and I’ll never forget the memories and friends.”

Jenna Z., Youth Member - 41 words

“I have been able to experience a lot of adventures through Guiding, from my first sleepover in Sparks to planning my own camp. I have been able to go caving and attend Arts Alive and SOAR. Guiding has taught me responsibility and many life long skills.”

Youth Member - 46 words

“For me, Guiding has been a place to feel safe adventuring with unique friends. Without Guiding I would never have met them or my many fantastic leaders. I have explored BC and gained experience away from the familiar and hopefully encouraged younger girls to do the same.”

Caillin S., Youth Member - 47 words

“My first time camping is one of the greatest memories that guiding has given me. I would have never experienced how to camp and the joys and frustrations of it. I have made new friendships and had many adventures. Guiding has meant a lot to me and I will take my memories with me forever.”

Anita B., Youth Member - 55 words

“I’ve been in Guiding for 11 years and from playing ladders at my Brownie meeting to a 6 night Area camp, I have enjoyed every minute. I had fun camping, selling cookies and meeting new people. I’ve learned how to start a fire in any weather, how to sew and many other skills in between. I’ve made a lot of fun memories and I have a lot more to come. Guiding has been a great adventure.”

Youth Member - 76 words

“I have enjoyed the many aspects of Guiding, whether it was camping, SOAR, Unit activities or just making friends. The two SOARs I attended bring back very fond memories of facials around the campsite and our hair washing station in the middle of the field. And who could ever forget all that dust. But if I have to choose just one special thing that I will take with me for the rest of my life from Guiding, it would be the wonderful friendships.”

Charlayne P., Youth Member - 83 words

“There are so many great memories that I will keep close and remember forever. One of my favourite and most exhausting camps that I attended was SOAR 2004. I still remember hiking many miles with our huge backpacks towering over us as we staggered to our campsite and almost collapsed from the midday heat. Girl Guides has impacted my life in so many ways and it has been an adventure, full of excitement and friends every step of the way.” I’d like to than the leaders for all you have done.”

Jennifer C., Youth Member - 91 words

“Over the years Guiding has meant so much to me. I would have to say that some of my best memories were camping with my group. My amazing Guiding friends would always greet me with a warm hello, even in the morning when the leaders were yelling at us to wake up. I don’t think we ever did end up sleeping in. My leaders were the ones who motivated us. If it hadn’t been for their enthusiastic energy, I would never have managed to get my Canada Cord! To sum things up, Guiding was one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my life! Thank you!”

Youth Member - 107 words

“I wasn’t thrilled when I found out that we had to write a speech. Then I started to think back on the opportunities Guiding had given me. I remember when I put up a tent for the first time without a leader’s help and how proud I was, not only of myself but my team members. It rained the entire weekend; however nothing could dampen my spirit of accomplishment. I remember using the first-aid I’d been taught in a meeting one night. We learned to appreciate our environment either by doing garbage clean-up or building bird houses. I remember learning not just to cook, but to cook fast, because when it came to mealtimes everyone was hungry. I remember learning to trust in my own abilities to carry out a task, and not rely on others to do it for me. Most of all, I will remember the sound of laughter in the deep of the woods.”

I have learned about leadership and determination, had unforgettable experiences, met wonderful people, and made lifelong friends. These memories will be with me for the rest of my life. Thank you.”

“Girl Guides is a big part of my life thus far:
• Friends
• Experiences
• Unforgettable
• Teaches leadership
Favourite part – my Pathfinder trip to Australia where I had a fun and surreal experience with friends. The impact of Guiding on lives is huge and it would not have been possible without Penny and Jeannie, Thanks.”

April M., Youth Member - 29 words

“The one special thing that I will take with me for the rest of my life from Guiding is the opportunities that I would not normally be able to receive.”

Samantha D., Youth Member - 30 words

“Girl Guides has given me the opportunity to experience many different things: camping, friendships, laughter and leadership to name a few. Guiding has opened so many new doors for me to explore and wander through.“

Youth Member - 35 words

“Me in Guiding would not be possible without these special people:
• Donna Cavan – Pathfinder leader
• Gail Greff - Guide leader, first year
• Trudine Wilson – favourite Commissioner
• Mom - who drove me to all meetings and events.
I have many memorable experiences with fellow pathfinders Sadie and Melissa”

Youth Member - 45 words

“I’ve been Guiding pretty much my whole life. I’ve come out of this group with so many memories. I’ve learned how to survive outdoors and have a rockin’ good time with some awesome ladies! I’ll never forget all the good times such at Mt. W., Bus Stop and all the good laughs we’ve had together.”

Justine B., Youth Member - 55 words

“I’ve been in Guiding two thirds of my life and I’ve had many memorable moments. Singing songs, playing games, and roasting marshmallows, but my most memorable experience was when we went to Australia and met the Australian Girl Guides. We all made fantastic friends and created life long memories to cherish forever. It’s something I will never forget.”

Kaitlin D., Youth Member - 58 words

Amy J., Youth Member - 59 words

“The one special thing I will take with me from Guiding came to me from my trip to PEI in 2003. I was one of 12 people selected to bike around PEI for 3 weeks. It was the most amazing trip and incredible experience of my life and I will keep those memories for the rest of my life.”

Danielle P., Youth Member - 61 words

“My favourite experience in Guiding was when my Pathfinder group went to Perth, Australia. We were able to make many new friends. It was a trip of a lifetime. My greatest memory throughout Guiding has been all the friends I have made. I would like to thank my leaders, Jeannie Hoskins and my mom Penny Pagely for making this all possible.”
“Guiding has always been a big part of my life, from my first Brownie sleepover to my very first “real” camp, and finally to my Gold Camp. Guiding has given me some wonderful friends, some amazing opportunities and taught me responsibility. All in all, Guiding has made me a better person, and that is something I can take with me for the rest of my life.”

Rebecca B., Youth Member - 66 words

“Throughout my years in Guiding, we were pretty silly. Between breaking rules and playing games, we seemed to enjoy ourselves. Being chased by authority figures at the Corn maze, eating bugs at the Bug Zoo, and complaining about bedrolls were all memorable moments for me. I would like to say thank you to all the leaders who were part of my Guiding experience for the extra time and efforts.”

Youth Member - 69 words

“I joined Girl Guides at age 6. I wasn’t part of any other group so I decided that meeting every week with girls my age would be fun. Little did I know that I would be embarking on an unforgettable journey. Guiding has given me the leadership skills to be successful in life plus unforgettable experiences. But most of all my Guiding friendships that reach as far away as Australia and they will last forever.”

Kyla G., Youth Member - 75 words

“I  recently travelled across Europe. After a month of sleeping in strange beds in countries where I couldn't speak the language, I visited Our Chalet. I immediatly felt at home even though I was still over 8,000km away from my own bed. This was one of the best moments of my trip. I then realized I felt at home because I was at home. It may not have been my home, but we all shared similar experiences and values. We shared in the sisterhood of Guiding.”

“What Guiding has given me is just too much to fit into 30 seconds...it has given me:
• Courage to try new things
• Friends I would have never met
• Abilities and skills I would never have learned
• Opportunities I could never have hoped for
• A whole bunch of neat little badges
Without Guiding I would not be the person I am today and I certainly would not have gotten up in front of a whole whack of people to say a speech (no matter how short). But above all, Guiding has given me what it does to everyone – love.”

Youth Member - 105 words

“I think that the most important thing Guiding has given me is confidence – because when you know that you can hike 18 km in one day and come out smiling, a high school math test doesn’t seem like such a big deal anymore.

The other thing I’d like to say about Guiding is how amazing it is that anywhere I go in the world, I can find girls who I’ll have something in common with, who I can start a friendship with – just because we’re in Guiding. This was really brought home to me on my Adventure to the Capitals trip this summer, when we kept meeting groups of Guides who would immediately start a conversation when they saw our uniforms. All these girls were different but we all had one thing in common – Guiding.”

"When I moved from  Vancouver to Ottawa to go to university, I was excited, but also scared. When  I arrived in Ottawa, I felt alone and missed home. One day I called the Guide House. The woman who picked up the phone was so kind and she welcomed me immediately. I got connected with the area Link Group and met other young adults experiencing the same things as me. I subsequently made some life long friends. I knew that Guiding is a sisterhood extending to 144 countries, but  until that moment, I didn't really appreciate the importance and uniqueness of  this sisterhood. No matter where I am, I now know there will be someone to welcome me and support me, and that is an unbelievable feeling! Guiding means I have a home and sisters in 144 countries."
