We have created templates for your use when you are speaking or writing about Guiding. These consistent messages are a place to start. These cards will allow you to take an idea and make it your own. The idea is to take the basic points and change them with every situation, keeping in mind:
1. Speak with conviction; show your passion for Guiding. Let people hear your story—why are you in Guiding? Your heartfelt story will inspire and motivate faster than facts and figures.
2. Remember that you are representing Guiding and project the best image of the organization.
3. Think about how you will introduce yourself and what you want to say.
4. Remember why you are going and what your expectations are.
5. Think about your role in Guiding in business terms. If you are the Delrey Area Commissioner, you would be senior management for your area or Provincial Program Adviser would be program manager.
6. Mistakes are okay. Mistakes make us look human. If you stumble, don't repeat sentences or phrases unless they are pivotal to your speech. Don't point out your own mistakes. You are the expert on this topic during the time your speech is made.
7. Match your attire (uniform) to the occasion; i.e., business attire (blue dress pants, dress shirt [optional], blue or black shoes). It should be comfortable for you and comfortable for the audience, too.
8. How is your posture? Be Comfortable & Amicable: Straight & Poised. You can walk and use the space you have; however, don’t lean on the podium or lectern.
9. How is your voice? Bring variations by changing loudness and tone as per mood of your words and theme of your speech. Modulate your voice. Use it to add emphasis, etc.
10. How is your language? It should be comfortable for you and the audience. Use words that are natural to you and use phrases that are understood by all. Avoid acronyms and Guiding slang.
