Volunteer Opportunities

Volunteer with BC Girl Guides!

Girl Guides has a wide range of volunteer positions available to women who wish to be members* of the organization and share their time and talents with Guiding.  We’re looking for members from all walks of life who believe that today’s girls can accomplish great things, and who want to help them to grow into responsible citizens of the world. Whether you can contribute only for a short term or make a regular weekly or monthly commitment, we need your enthusiasm and your talents!

  • No experience necessary - you don’t need to have been in Guiding as a girl.
  • You don’t need to even know a girl or woman in Guiding!
  • Opportunities are available in many positions – working with adults only or directly with girls.
  • Training is available – both on the job and on-going.
  • We are open to all ages.
  • Mentors are available to help you learn the ropes.
  • You can join at any time of the year.

*We welcome all women to become members. In order to become a member, individuals must complete a screening process to ensure a safe environment for our girls.

Below is some basic information about volunteer opportunities within our organization – for more specific information about opportunities in your area please visit our Volunteer Opportunities in your Community page, or call us toll-free at 1-800-565-8111.

FAQ – Women and Volunteering with Girl Guides of Canada

Volunteering with Girls
Whether for an evening, a month or a year there are opportunities to work with girls.
As a unit resource person you could:

  • Test for badges
  • Teach a craft
  • Lead a hike
  • Teach about your culture and traditions
  • Share a special skill.

You could work in a team with other women to provide program for a unit of girls (see branch information under the heading "Welcome to Guiding" above left).

  • If you are not available on a weekly basis, we can provide flexible scheduling and job sharing to help make this work for you.
  • Most units meet for 1-2 hours per week through the school year.
  • Some prep work is required, as well as the occasional planning meeting with other Guiders.
  • You will have the option to participate in activities outside your unit, based on your interests and your personal schedule.

Volunteering with Adults
Working with girls is not the only volunteer opportunity available through Girl Guides. All over BC, Guiding has opportunities for people with special skills who are interested in the following areas:

  • Training adult members
  • Reception/customer service work
  • Treasurers and Secretaries
  • Administrators (to chair committees)
  • Advisers (who provide resources for International, Environment, Arts, Music, Active Living, Camping, etc.)
  • Special events
  • Tell us your strengths and we’ll find you the perfect fit!

Registered Guiding members are invited to apply for positions on Provincial Committees.  If you are interested in any of the provincial committees below, we invite you to visit their web pages to learn more about the work they do. When positions become available, they will be posted on these pages.

General information about volunteer opportunities:

Unit Positions
Groups of girls who meet together regularly with their leaders are known as 'units'. In a unit, typically, there are group leaders and a treasurer, and there may be other positions as well, such as cookie coordinators. If you have an interest or talent to share, no matter how much time you can spare, we can help find a position that’s right for you. No experience is necessary and you can join any time. To find out about unit positions in your community, call 1-800-565-8111 (toll free) or visit our Volunteer Opportunities in your Community page.

District Positions
In Guiding, units within a community are organized into 'districts'. Within each district, there are many volunteer opportunities, such as commissioner, deputy commissioner, adviser, treasurer and secretary. As well, there may be opportunities to help at events, special projects and with cookie sales. To find out about district positions in your community, call 1-800-565-8111 (toll free) or visit our Volunteer Opportunities in your Community page.

Division and Area Positions
In Guiding, districts within a larger community are divided into 'divisions' and 'areas'. In BC, there are 18 Guiding areas. Within each area, there are many volunteer opportunities, such as commissioner, deputy commissioner, adviser, treasurer, secretary, newsletter and website editor and others who may help with events and special projects. To find out about area positions in your community, call 1-800-565-8111 (toll free) or visit our Volunteer Opportunities in your Community page.

National level Positions
National level volunteers have the unique opportunity to shape the overall direction of the Girl Guide Movement in Canada. Their experience and creativity help to create programs and services that are used across the country. See our National Volunteer Opportunities page for full details.
